<p>Mount Longonot is a dormant stratovolcano rising 2,776 metres above the floor of the Great Rift Valley, its last major eruption dating back several hundred years. A well-marked trail climbs roughly 500 vertical metres from the park gate to the crater rim in around two hours, rewarding hikers with a 360-degree panorama across Lake Naivasha, the Rift Valley escarpment, and the forested crater floor 250 metres below -- itself large enough to hold a small town. The fitter and more adventurous can continue around the full crater rim, a further two to three hours through grassland frequented by buffalo, giant eland, and birds of prey. Its proximity to Nairobi, barely 90 minutes by road, makes it one of Kenya's most accessible serious hikes.</p>
