Meeting Point
Depart Nairobi in the morning for the roughly 3-hour drive north to Mount Kenya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Africa's second-highest peak. After a briefing at the park gate, begin a guided hike through the ancient montane forest -- home to colobus monkey, elephant, and buffalo trails -- and into the bamboo zone beyond. Reach your overnight lodge or mountain bandas by mid-afternoon, with time to rest before dinner and an early night ahead of the following day's push higher.
Accommodation: Mountain Lodge / Bandas (Naro Moru or Sirimon route)
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
An early start climbs beyond the forest line into Mount Kenya's Afro-alpine moorland, where giant lobelia and groundsel -- plants found only at this altitude on East Africa's highest peaks -- create an otherworldly landscape. Clear mornings offer views of the mountain's jagged, glaciated summit peaks. Descend by late morning, stopping for a packed lunch on the way down, then depart for the return drive to Nairobi, arriving by early evening. Two days of forest, bamboo, and high-altitude moorland on one of Africa's great mountains.
Accommodation: N/A (return day)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
