Day-by-Day Itinerary

Descend through turquoise lagoons and emerald mountains to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on this extraordinary Indian Ocean island. Our representative meets you and transfers you to your beachfront hotel -- typically on the north or west coast where the lagoon is calmest and most colourful. Mauritius is immediately striking: perfectly maintained roads lined with bougainvillea, the towering peaks of the Black River Gorges, and that lagoon so uniformly turquoise it appears artificially coloured. Check in, change, and spend your first afternoon on the most beautiful beach you have ever seen. Welcome cocktail and dinner at the hotel.

Accommodation: North/West Coast Beach Hotel (4-5 star)

Meals: Dinner

A full-day catamaran cruise explores the most spectacular corners of Mauritius's northern lagoon. Sail to Ile aux Cerfs -- a small island of powder-white sand surrounded by impossibly clear water -- for snorkelling among colourful reef fish and giant sea turtles. Continue to the famous underwater waterfall illusion viewpoint. Snorkel stop at Gabriel Island, one of Mauritius's finest snorkelling spots. Freshly grilled seafood lunch is served on the boat deck. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon for a sunset swim and dinner at leisure.

Accommodation: North/West Coast Beach Hotel (4-5 star)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Venture inland to discover Mauritius beyond the beach. The Black River Gorges National Park shelters rare endemic birds including the Mauritius kestrel (brought back from the brink of extinction). Continue to Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths -- a geological phenomenon of undulating dunes in seven distinct colours created by volcanic cooling at different rates. Lunch at the Chamarel Coffee Plantation restaurant with views across the gorges. Visit the Bois Cheri Tea Estate -- the only tea plantation in the Indian Ocean -- for a factory tour and tasting session. Return via the historic capital Port Louis and its famous Caudan Waterfront.

Accommodation: North/West Coast Beach Hotel (4-5 star)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Today is entirely at your leisure -- Mauritius's gift to the well-deserved rested. Sleep in, indulge in the hotel's spa (traditional Mauritian massage or hot stone treatment), swim in the Indian Ocean or the pool, take a kayak or paddleboard across the lagoon. For the active, kite surfing lessons are available on Le Morne Brabant beach (UNESCO site), or a championship round of golf at one of Mauritius's world-class courses. For the romantic, a sunset catamaran cruise with Creole dinner and dancing can be arranged.

Accommodation: North/West Coast Beach Hotel (4-5 star)

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

A lingering final breakfast looking out across the lagoon. One last swim in the Indian Ocean before packing up for your afternoon transfer to the airport. Duty free shops in Mauritius offer excellent local rum (Seven Colours, Pink Pigeon), vanilla products, and locally made model wooden sailing ships as souvenirs. Board your Air Mauritius or connecting flight to Nairobi carrying the memory of five days in one of the world's most beautiful islands -- an experience that tends to produce a single, consistent desire: to return.
