Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your Kenya Explorer Safari begins in Nairobi with a comprehensive briefing from your lead guide, covering the itinerary, wildlife expectations, and photography tips. Depart by 7:00 AM heading southwest toward Maasai Mara. The drive passes through the Great Rift Valley -- stop at the escarpment viewpoint for photographs across this 6,000-kilometre geological scar in the Earth's surface. Arrive at the Mara for an afternoon game drive: first lion, first elephant, first crossing -- the Mara delivers from the first kilometre.

Accommodation: Mara Safari Camp (3-4 star tented camp)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

A full day in the greatest wildlife reserve in Africa. Pre-dawn game drive for predator activity; bush breakfast in the field; midday rest at camp; golden-hour afternoon drive targeting river crossings. Your guide's deep knowledge of the Mara's wildlife families -- named lion prides, known cheetah mothers, individual elephant matriarchs -- transforms a game drive into a narrative. Evening campfire with stories from decades of guiding East Africa's wilderness.

Accommodation: Mara Safari Camp (3-4 star tented camp)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Depart the Mara after breakfast and drive northeast, crossing back through the Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, arriving in time for lunch. Afternoon boat ride on the lake: hippos at close range, African fish eagle performances, egrets and herons on the papyrus fringe. Evening walk on Crescent Island among giraffe, wildebeest, and zebra -- the only place in Kenya where you can walk freely among these animals without a safety fence.

Accommodation: Lake Naivasha Camp / Lodge

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning cycle through Hell's Gate National Park -- Africa's only park where you pedal through scenery shared with zebra, giraffe, and buffalo. The dramatic volcanic gorge with its steam vents is one of Kenya's most spectacular geological sites. Continue to Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its flamingo flocks (numbers vary by season), white and black rhino sanctuary, leopard, and the magnificent Baboon Cliff viewpoint.

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge / Sarova Lion Hill

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A longer drive day taking you north from the Rift Valley highlands through Nanyuki and into the semi-arid Samburu National Reserve -- a completely different Kenya from the south. Samburu's dramatic landscape of doum palms, Ewaso Nyiro River, and rocky outcrops shelters species found nowhere south of the equator: the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk (the giraffe-necked antelope that feeds standing upright). Afternoon game drive along the river where crocodiles and hippos share space with drinking elephant herds.

Accommodation: Samburu Game Lodge / Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A full day in Samburu's unique north-Kenya ecosystem. Dawn drive when the Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe are most active around the river. Midday visit to a traditional Samburu village -- the people of this region have maintained their traditions with remarkable resilience. The women's beadwork is extraordinary; the elders' stories of sharing this landscape with lions and leopards are humbling. Afternoon drive and evening sundowner on a kopje overlooking the river as the dry season light turns the doum palms gold.

Accommodation: Samburu Game Lodge / Camp

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A final sunrise game drive in Samburu -- the north gives lavishly to the last. After breakfast, the long drive south back to Nairobi, passing through Nanyuki (equator crossing photo stop) and the Mount Kenya highlands. Arrive Nairobi by late afternoon. Drop-offs at agreed Nairobi points. Seven days, six reserves, a lifetime of East Africa's greatest wildlife encounters -- the Kenya Explorer Safari is the definitive introduction to this extraordinary country.
