Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Nairobi at 7:00 AM heading southeast on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, turning south at Emali towards the Amboseli basin. The drive takes 4-5 hours, with the landscape transitioning from highland farms through Maasai rangelands to the wide, flat plains surrounding the park. Mount Kilimanjaro -- weather permitting -- first appears on the horizon as a snow-capped white dome of improbable perfection. Arrive at your lodge or camp for lunch, then afternoon game drive in Amboseli National Park. The Enkongo Narok swamp draws enormous herds of elephant in the late afternoon -- bulls with tusks so long they nearly drag on the ground -- a sight unlike anywhere else in Africa.
