<p>Lake Elementaita is a shallow, alkaline soda lake in the Great Rift Valley, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Lakes Nakuru and Bogoria for its exceptional value to the region's flamingo populations. Its mineral-rich waters support the algae that sustain thousands of lesser and greater flamingos, along with pelicans, kingfishers, and more than 450 recorded bird species overall -- one of the highest counts of any single site in Kenya. On the lake's northern shore, the Kariandusi prehistoric site preserves stone tools and fossils dating back roughly a million years, adding an archaeological dimension rarely found alongside a birding destination. The surrounding escarpment and acacia woodland make for a scenic, unhurried day away from Nairobi.</p>
