<p>Fourteen Falls is a wide, braided series of cascades where the Athi River tumbles over a rocky escarpment near Thika, roughly 60 kilometres northeast of Nairobi. The falls take their name from the fourteen distinct channels visible when water levels are high, particularly during and immediately after the rains, when the volume and spray make for a genuinely dramatic sight. Traditional dug-out canoes ferry visitors across the pool at the base of the falls, and the surrounding riverine vegetation and rocky outcrops make for good photography and casual swimming in the calmer pools. A popular stop en route is the historic Blue Post Hotel in Thika, and the drive passes through Kenya's pineapple-growing heartland.</p>
